When you take its output and patch it into a Gameboy, the Gameboy now reads this variable oscillation instead of its own internal crystal’s oscillation, giving you control over the Gameboy’s pitch and computation speed. The Pro-Sound Mod is patching the audio signal from the Gameboy’s volume knob directly to its output, resulting in a louder signal with more bass.

Costis is screwing around with the clock on a GBC and I just couldn’t keep myself from trying it out. He quoted some pretty insane max clock speed and I wanted to see whether it would really go that high. Turns out it goes pretty high: ~24Mhz (~3x) for GBC games, and ~48Mhz (~6x) (!) for GB games. Normal speed is 8.338Mhz input, though GB games internally run at half speed (~4Mhz), which is why they can run much faster.

This is just a GBC hooked up to a frequency generator implemented on a Spartan-3E starter kit. No extra mods were done to the GBC. I plugged in my desktop speakers to the audio jack so you can hear it better.

The BIOS ROM can actually run at over 70Mhz but the screen glitches up pretty weirdly and my setup is too crappy to make it stable. At those speeds the drive strength on the FPGA and other details start to become much more important.

Test run of my (d)iskette (O)rgan doing Toccata & Fugue.

People have made floppy drives sing before, but this is my personal take on it.

Features two 3 1/2″ drives and two 5 1/4″ drives connected to a PIC18f14k50 microcontroller. It interfaces to any MIDI source via MIDI over USB. Straight MIDI would also be possible with an additional small circuit and some minor firmware changes. This initial version can respond to all 128 MIDI notes, and pitch bends +/- 2 semitones.

As it can produce only four simultaneous notes, and each drive has a different range and tonal characteristics, best results are obtained by arranging compositions by hand. However, it features two modes of operation: in one mode, MIDI channels 1 through 4 are played directly on floppy drives 1 through 4. In the other mode, all 16 MIDI channels are read, and notes are “intelligently” divvied out on a first-come, first-serve basis. “Note stealing” ensures that melody lines sound, but chords are often cut short. One or the other produces acceptable results for many unmodified MIDI files straight out of your favorite media player.

I apologize for the poor video quality.

***

Update Feb. 10, 2011: Wow, I just want to give a HUGE thank-you to every one of you for the overwhelmingly positive response! It truly means a lot to me.

I’m reading all your comments, and I’ve been answering individual questions–but due to popular demand, I will be posting a web site with additional information very soon. If you were interested in how this works, how I built it, and what else it can do, check back soon!

Again, thank you everybody for all your kind words!

Track Selection was directly inspired by the band The Glitch Mob (http://www.theglitchmob.com ) HERE IS THE MOVIE LIST!! FINALLY!!http://pastebin.com/2CGkxpEQ Clips are listed in order of appearance. It is not intended to tell a story. I didnt edit it that way. I wanted to relate sound to motion. So each and every cut you see was picked for a reason.

Programs I used: Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 / After Effects CS5 For those of you who find the video too long for one sitting, I dont blame you at all lol. 15 min is kinda visually exhausting. So I put times below so you can jump right to the segment you have time for. 0:39 Segment 1. Tv on the Radio – Red Dress (Glitch Mob Remix) 4:24 Segment 2. Evil Nine – All the Cash (Glitch Mob Remix) 6:20 Segment 3. Nalepa – Monday (Glitch Mob Remix) 9:42Segment 4. edIT – Crunk de Gaulle (instrumental ) Credits Song: Boreta – Bubblin in the Cut

Time to complete: Id say total “just editing”, not picking out clips or rendering/post work, bout 200 hours. Over the span of many days

Id also like to point out that there are no copyright infringements because I used public domain trailers for video footage and permission from song artist. Thanks to all involved in the production and creation of the movies used as well.

Comments as a result of not reading the description will no longer be approved. These include: Asking what movie is at what time. Asking what software is used or how long it took to make. No posts about its lack of “story” or length. However if you read the description and still wanna say ‘it sucks’ or ‘its awesome’ feel free. I just feel that I’ve edited the description about as many times as the video itself in an effort to address 90% of the questions on here and still no one reads it.
